Human Bonsai - Butoh and poetry

English text follows the Japanese one.

HUMAN BONSAI - BUTOH AND POETRY

Even though many people often want to liken butoh with something seemingly similar like contemporary dance, I sometimes think this is a bit misguided. They may appear similar at first, both being movement of the body and probably little bit unorthodox to an untrained eye. But in many ways, butoh, that works largely on the basis of mental images, words, thoughts and ideas, is much closer to poetry as an art form than it is to for example contemporary dance. I think a good butoh dancer is a good poet, the one who can see dreams while being awake, or bring their own dreams in to the reality of awakening for others to see. Whereas a trained dancer trains their body to be more flexible, more proficient in their dance, a butoh dancer withdraws, goes within themself and trains their mind. Butoh dancer is someone who brings their dreams for others to see, can exceed their own body and express something really profound and true for all those who are witnessing it too. Sometimes the dancer can subconsciously create imagery that will resonate in an audience beyond their own understanding and in those moments, some sort of catharsis is achieved I believe.

Butoh is flow of time through the body. Existing in a space for a duration, but also the dancer themself goes through many transformations throughout their life and career, as all living beings too. This evidently changes the way people dance, young people may have a lot of energy, but older dancers may have much more patience and discipline, skill that only comes through decades of dedication and devotion to their practice.

Every butoh dancer is dancing their life. Their experiences, their thoughts and dreams and fears. Nobody can copy another one, because each body is different, like handwriting is to each person. Every body is a poem in it's own right. Much like the handwriting of each person, it is unique to every dancer, and in that butoh also nears calligraphy. I find it intriguing, that so many butoh dancers are also calligraphers and writers. Just like perfecting ones posture and characters in calligraphy, a dancer aims to perfect their heart for butoh. Each person needs to find their own poetry, the music within their own soul and body, movement that resonates within them in a way, that can open up their whole existence to the experience of butoh. It is not always nice or easy practice, I think it demands a certain amount of self-discipline and honesty to understand, what is your true self, a skill of introspection and self-reflection that might sometimes be hard to take.

A good butoh dancer may have an idea, an image or a seed of a work, something that will sprout out of their body, bloom in front of an audience, then, imminently wither and decay. These often come in the form of butoh notation, poems or words that guide some dancers work. It can be as simple as one character. It can be many. It can be for example a vision of a lightning piercing the whole body, or thousands of little holes forming in ones body, and thousands of little insects flying out, or flowers blooming inside of ones body, etc. Important thing is, that butoh dancer, like a poet, is gathering these notes or images into their body through out all their life. They keep reading, writing, rewriting, thinking, forgetting, remembering, working on many things like this throughout their lives. They express these ideas with their body, make them visible for other people to see.

This has in my opinion always been fundamental part of butoh, as both Hijikata and Ohno also were both thinking a lot about their processes and talking and writing about them as well. Especially Hijikata, who originated the whole idea of butoh notation in his works and productions in order to guide larger groups of dancers through his works. Also the connection between butoh and poetry has been there from the beginning. Yoshimazu Gozo, a famous Japanese contemporary poet was also friend of Hijikata and still uses recordings of his voice also part of his performances from time to time. I once participated his lecture, where he spoke about Hijikata's language, it's rhythm and dance-like flow, poetic nature.

I think butoh dancers are like stray dogs. They are often not part of some clear group but move in between various groups, and in that kind of looseness I also found my kind of tribe I think. Even before I started dancing, through the sound, poetry and my artwork, butoh dancers appeared to embrace me as one of their own, which of course made me feel a sense of belonging like I had not had before.

Just like in poetry, there is ambivalence in butoh too. Fragility and strength that can coexist without cognitive dissonance or controversy. Vulnerability and harshness. An explosion of young, vividly colored cherry blossoms against the parched bark of an old sakura tree. A lonely blooming plum tree on the mountainside, facing a city burned by the ravages of war. Blood mixed with ash and snow. The life force of weeds growing through the rubble. A butterfly that swallows the wind before it becomes a storm.

This comes to the point, where I think connection between butoh and poetry also comes down to the Japanese language. In Japanese poetry, there is a term called, kireji. This means a cutting word or syllable, something that breaks the rhythm and creates space for the new image. It might be little bit hard to comprehend for those not familiar with the concept, but I think it is somewhat essential element to butoh. In some sense, butoh always contains this kind of breaking of rhythm. Especially when it is brought to the living world instead of stage, streets or forests, in the natural world where it can have something to cut against, a rhythm to break, that being the mundane, ordinary world, within which a ghost-like apparition suddenly appears. It is like climbing up a mountain for a long while, and suddenly finally seeing the vastness of the empty space that is the valley below. It is the sense of space in between the mountains, that gives them their beauty and weight. I have mainly been working with Japanese and Taiwanese dancers. Because of this connection to language, I think it is also very interesting to see and experience butoh dancers from other parts of the world. Butoh keeps adapting to different cultures and different contexts through the practicioner's ways of thinking, through their language.

The language that guides our thinking shapes our reality. And it shapes our consciousness and sense of aesthetics too. Maybe that is why I also find this aspect so interesting, being originally from Finland, completely separate language system, while I naturalized my consciousness into Japanese and now also learn Mandarin in order to be able to study poetry and butoh in this language too. There are many things in Mandarin that are amazingly beautiful and make my brain feel good when I understand how the thought in the language works.

Languages and speaking have also the musical aspect that I really love. I use my own Japanese and sometimes Finnish poetry in performances, but I also occasionally dance while using other people's poetry instead of music. Somehow it feels that on these occasions, human voice and it's texture and emotional weight can go deeper than composed or produced music. In this example, I am dancing to 雨なのに, Eventhough it is raining, by one of my favorite poets, Sachiko Yoshihara. I think especially her poetry and it's quiet sadness is something that resonates within me quite deeply.

One thing I also want to write about is a thing I get asked quite often in my works, which is the thought of 人間盆栽, human bonsai. I keep giving contradicting answers because I find it amusing and because sometimes I am a little bit irritated by people wanting to understand everything, but to put it short, among other things, it is one of my butoh notations. Of course it is more than that also, as it is also the name of a project of improvised music collective I was running in Japan, but more or less to me it is taking human beings out of the context of our humanity, and planting us into the world of plants, life seeking it's path towards the light, it is thoughts and dreams, it is the changing of seasons, it is my way of perceiving the reality we inhabitat.

In my drawings I can hide things for myself to remember later without anyone else understanding the language of it, but it can also be as simple as following the season through drawing certain flowers of trees according to the on going season. We all have a seed of life within us, we all sprout, we all bloom and we all wither and die and decay. We encounter each other in different phases of this life, we endure heavy rains and cold winters, some of us die, some others will be born, we will watch them grow and we will go on living here, all together. Some people say my art is depressing, dark, bleak, but to me it is celebration of life and persistence in this cold dark universe. We are always aiming to grow towards the light. No matter how frail, no matter how weak, we are seeking our path resiliently towards life. And I think that is a beautiful thing. I think in some sense, that is also the poetry of butoh. Resilience and strength in the face of hardship and suffering, bending with the cold winter wind instead of breaking, waiting for the spring.

When I gather some branches and plants, tie them on my face to cover my eyes, I am cutting of the sense human beings count on the most in their life, in order to achieve some other way of perceiving reality. Erasing my humanity. Self. To become a thing instead. Becoming a tree. Goes without saying that this to me is much easier in the nature, with the wind and the sun, or clouds and rain, natural reality surrounding me. I have also had the opportunity to have other people become my human bonsai, which has made me really happy. That has made me also dream of a butoh exhibition, that I would arrange like flower arrangement or bonsai exhibition, but instead of vases, I would have butoh dancers on stands, under single spotlights, just slowly moving, existing in that space, nearly unmoved, still.

To me, butoh is essentially poetry of the flesh. And within the poetry of this flesh, there is written the story of my existence. It started very far away from here, and I do not know how or where it's end will be written, but I am very glad to exist right here, right now.

About a year ago I had a sudden realization, that the season of my life has changed. The rainy season after my spring had shifted, and I had finally entered my summer, with the sound of the cicadas and the roaring of the summer sea's waves. But within these warm, happy summer days, there is already the beautiful melancholy of the evening sunset's golden light, before this summer even begins, there is the echo of a memory of the next years Bon-festival dance. ..

The Poetry of Flesh and Rust

Flesh Hole
Dada BonesLost Mind

Weiches Loch

https://junkyardshaman.bandcamp.com/album/the-poetry-of-flesh-and-rust

Butoh and Industrial Sound - The Poetry of Flesh and Rust

I do not claim to have invented these thoughts or concepts, or even the combination of butoh and industrial music, as it is easily proven that Tatsumi Hijikata used to have experimental sound in his performances, and Byakko Sha was performing in the Einstürzende Neubauten video even before I was born, but I acknowledge that as a musician for butoh, and sometimes doing butoh myself also,I am working on a very specific field inside two very very niché fields of butoh and experimental sound. I am not an academic, and don't aim to be. This text is solely for those interested in the subject and my view of butoh and sound, which I figure might be around 20 people at best.

Tatsumi Hijikata in Hosotan

My first encounter with butoh has been the same as many people I think, in form of a short, low quality black and white clip of Tatsumi Hijikata's 疱瘡譚, Hosotan from 1972. In the video one can see Hijikata, looking like a muddy ghost, falling apart, body moving slowly and as if withdrawing from viewer. As impactful as the imagery itself, is the media, the low fidelity film recording, but I come to that later. What stuck with me is the imagery of disappearing, disintegrating, a body without humanity, the high contrasts of white painted body against the utter darkness of the background... Butoh is often called the dance of darkness, and in western world this is very often misinterpreted into some cool dualistic view of light vs darkness, good vs evil, but that darkness implies merely the physical darkness, the state of being unlit, left underexposed, unseen. Disappearing into the darkness. Butoh is very much the art of disappearance, in both physical sense and metaphysical sense. Some of the best performances I have seen have been merely silhouettes in the darkness, against the faint lighting somewhere else. In that kind of environment you understand the physicality of presence and ma, the sense of space.

It is not completely necessary, but in the context of performance, a good lighting techinician can also elevate it to another level, if they understand that they should be sculpting the body out of darkness. Luckily I have had the chance to witness many such performances and collaborate with such people also. The darkness adds up to the "low fidelity of reality", in which the human consciousness fills in the gaps and sometimes even when you are watching, you sometimes kind of wake up to the thought "what is this that is unfolding in front of me now?". For this kind of experience I very much prefer performing at the dusk, outside, in the streets or among people who are not exposed to butoh before, because that adds to the dreamlike quality of the whole experience. We have done this with the Hokkaido based butoh dancer Akiyo, with our collaboration called Mokurai. To some it might be scary because a ghostlike butoh-dancer in the middle of what is considered "normal" blends the line between dream and awake, the real and unreal, life and death, and that is exactly what I aim to do with my work in general. Also in this context the ma becomes more interesting, in the sense of movement. Whereas the other world is noisy and rushing, the butoh-dancer can merely be, just exist in space, and it is a strong experience in its own right. Many times the response has been better or more interesting than in a place where everyone knows and expects butoh. The same also goes for the industrial sound or noise music.
Many times when people expect it, they compare it to another bands or artists they have seen, but people who do not have prefixed ideas feel it on a more emotional level and that, to me at least, is more interesting approach to anything.

Yu Sonoda, in a YLE documentary.
In that video, Hijikata appears to be in state of disintegration, the movement is like that of someone who has lost the identity, self, into some pure mud of existence. He used to recall his experience of being stuck in the mud as a child, among many other rural youth experiences, as being one of the most definitive butoh experiences he had had. As a someone with a very similar rural youth, albeit on the other side of the world, I understand many of his recounts very innately. I think one of the important counterpoints of butoh is the cutting point of rural and industrial worlds, the modern and the primitive coming together and becoming timeless in that sense. I can not remember when I first encountered this material, but it stuck with me for many many years and probably influenced my sense of aesthetics from that point on. It stayed somewhere in the back of my mind, until in 2018 there was a Finnish music documentary that featured an interview with Yu Sonoda. At this point I was still completely unaware that I would ever move to Japan, learn any Japanese in my lifetime, or that I would ever perform with the very same Yu Sonoda in the future, but his dance and his thoughts resparked and inspired me, hurled me back to the thought, that this was something that had been in the back of my mind all along. That was huge influence especially on my spoken word album Flesh Hole, on which the driving idea behind the music was at first, that if I was to make music for my own butoh performance, this is what I would want it to sound like. I was searching the sound of my body, also using my body as a sound source for it. Eventually the work was somewhat repurposed, and went on to be the trilogy of spoken word albums with Dada Bones and Lost Mind.

In this context I have spoken of my music as "industrial sound", but that is merely to give it some context, and trying to put it in a box it is often seem, although I do not think it is purely industrial, and probably many puritanists of the genre also agree. I also use many normal or traditional instruments, shakuhachi, guitars, saxophone etc, whatever I think is needed to convey the meaning and fit the purpose of what I am doing at any given time. Most of my instruments still are pieces of scrap metal, ceramics, stones, bamboo, and self-built instruments with springs and wires attached to it, stuff that makes me a bit nervous at the airports every time, but miraculously enough have given me no trouble yet.

Nevertheless industrial music is probably at least mentally the sort of context I feel most closeness to, especially with the Osaka experimental music scene which was my home for so long, and hopefully will be in the future also after I get my life sorted out.

My approach to music is very much that of poetry of rust. I do not think in terms of musicality, but of material poetry of sound and words. Images, landscapes, moments, memories and dreams slowly fading away, those same muddy ghosts and withering flowers decaying away.. In that sense what interests and horrifies me the most is time. Both in sound and in butoh, the the time is flowing through us as we exist in the same space for the duration of the performance. This is a big reason for why I prefer performing with butoh artists than alone. If I play alone in a live event, it feels like people are taking it in as "music" and for some reason that appears to bother me, as I don't think it is really music. I think calling it as such is an insult to musicians who work hard for their music. To me it is more merely getting there and existing in space for a certain amount of time. In this sense, butoh dancer also extends the work from "music" into creating a mental space, a dream which we all see unfold together, as I prefer to reference it.

In a more irrelevant sense, I also like the project name Junkyard Shaman as it combines our post apocalyptic industrial junkyards from 1000 years in the future to something that stands as an image of tradition from 1000 years in the past. Somewhere within this 2000 year span, I existed and made my work.

In my work, the end has always been the most important thing. The end is that which imminently follows every beginning. And in every end there is the destruction that begins the new cycle of rebirth, the empty field of ash from which the new seedlings will grow out.

One driving thought is never to do any more than is necessary. That is probably very much the original influence of butoh in my work. If the existence, sense of being is strong enough, one does not need to fill the space with anything meaningless and unnecessary. Sometimes I succeed, usually I fail at this. Especially if I have not played in a long time or there is only one performance in the calendar, it quickly becomes the sort of situation where you try to squeeze yourself through one small needlehole and do everything at once.

I never practice. In fact, I hate practicing. My aim is not to become better or more accustomed to what I do. My aim is to lose skill, find more uncertainty and things I do not understand. In this sense the biggest influence of my work might be the body of work of Samuel Beckett, which I see the closest western counterpart for butoh in many ways. In his works, things often drag on, repeat, get worse and worse, disintegrate and get lost.

A better word is discipline. My work is my discipline to which I have devoted all of my existence, and every time I do it, it is in servitude to my discipline. It keeps repeating the same, and yet it always becomes different. It may sound stupid or pretentious, but I think it is somewhat important approach to life; one should have something that is bigger and more important than yourself, something that one can serve, and to me, it is this path of my art.

Then what is butoh? I have been asked many times. Probably everybody has a different answer to the question, but to me, it is the poetry of the body. Of flesh and bones, an empty body without a mind. No thinking or feeding your ego with "look what I can do with all the practice I have had" as in some other forms of dancing or stage art. In some sense, I think butoh shares my thinking of losing instead of gaining, finding something within oneself that is fundamentally essential to being you and cutting out everything that is unnecessary. Every body has their own poetry, the sense of natural movement, the disabilities and abilities that life has brought you, you are an accumulation of your life, the time the body has spent on earth, all the experiences and personal life choices shape the body of the butoh dancer. In a way, the butoh creates the body for butoh. Every body is dancing out itself, the true nature of itself. And to me, that is the poetry of butoh. I am only interested in the individuals from whom I see, that more than showing all the kata they have learned from some workshops they have participated in, they are doing something that is essential and true to THEM. The kata might be important in getting you started, or to have some confidence to fall back on when you momentarily lose concentration, but with the many butoh dancers I have worked with the connecting quality is that they have something within them that they are expressing. This, of course can be extended to any form of art if wanted, but I think the bare boned nature of butoh makes it far more apparent than many other forms of art.

In current world there is a kind of trend to see butoh as some sort of extended trauma-healing work, especially in the new age circles, but in a way I am a little bit in opposition of this. It may be healing experience to become more connected with your body (for you are nothing beside it anyway to begin with), but if the main purpose of butoh is to serve as one's ladder to their own mental well-being, I think there are better ways to do that. Again, I think one should find things that are bigger than themselves and worth devotion; if one serves the butoh and not the other way around, it will result in much better butoh. I think it is the idea of dedication or devotion that is lost in many factions of life, but still lives strong in subcultures like experimental music, where there is pretty much nothing to gain, but people keep on doing it nevertheless.

Iori Kinki, photo by Hideo Akihisa

When thinking of the connection between noise and industrial music and butoh, one frequent collaborator I want to pick up is Iori Kinki, Osaka based butoh dancer with whom I have played many noise events in Osaka. In his body there is the sort of intensity that I find very fitting for harsher approach to sound, and I think people who have witnessed these performances can only agree that they are somehow strong experiences. Of course that is not only thing he can do, but somehow right from the beginning I felt like the intensity of his butoh fits really well in this sort of context also. It felt like his body is full of noise looking to get out.

Every body, every person has different kind of flow and rhythm, different existence. The purpose of the sound is to sculpt it out. With every single person, it feels different to play, although instruments would be exactly the same, the set up can be the same, and for every person the outcome will be different. And of course, not everybody need to have so intense approach to the sound, there are of course probably hundreds or thousands of people who can do completely fine without my kind of sound also. My area of interest is probably narrow, but deep. I am like that, and I have grown to respect many people who are built alike in that. One of those people is definitely Sin Tamon, with whom we had intense two days of making the sound for Hokkaido Butoh Festival's Mystery tour in 2024. He is an industrial music artist to much further extent than I am, and I have huge respect towards his creativity and skill. I highly recommend checking out his solo activities if you have a chance, and also the band Weiches Loch, which uses metal percussion instruments built by Tamon. To be transparent, I also used to be a member of the group in the past, but I also think it is much better without me. I think their sound is also very fitting for butoh, so I think it is relevant to mention.
When I collaborate with such artists, I try to create the environment where everybody can express their own inner self, worldview and thing they want to create as purely and unaltered as possible. It is my belief, that if we bring together artists who are uncompromisingly themselves, the result will be fantastic.

Weiches Loch

Making sound for butoh is a quite specific thing to do. As the light carves the body out of darkness, the sound sculpts the spirit out of silence. In this sense also it is important not to do anything unnecessary, but to create the space for things to unfold naturally.

I suspect some people would probably have the sort of approach where they cherry picked only experienced or famous butoh dancers to work with, but I also very much enjoy working with inexperienced dancers.More than whether they are experienced or not, I care about whether we match mentally or not. Playing with dancers with less experience often provides a chance of discovery and exploration for both of us. Also, I think the way I learned to play in the beginning was by playing with people who had much more experience than I did and learning while watching them work, so I think it is important to pay that kind of thing forward also. That is how you learn fast. In case of inexperienced dancers, I aim to provide an interface for existence, something they can rely on in their performance.

Chihao Bai, photo by Sakaki Asano
As mentioned before, my main interest is the flow of time. Not only in the context of a performance that lasts something from 15 to 90 minutes, but throughout human life. In butoh, one can witness the flow of time through a human body in the artist themself also. Some people's preference would probably be young butoh dancers, with intense movement, much raw energy and exploding expression, but I find myself often thinking they lack the weight, the patience, restraint and silence. I find myself thinking, they will become much better when life will first slow them down, eventually. There are of course some great exceptions with younger dancers also, for example Chihao Bai whose sense of presence and lack of anything unnecessary is just masterful, but often the more experienced butoh dancers have and immensely impressive sense of presence and sheer power of existence that is enough in itself.

Of course, this again comes to the poetry of the body, different for each person. Natural rhythm and flow of their movement, personality, everything. Some people resemble plants or flowers. Some people have more animalistic energy, some people feel like stone, unmoved, still...butoh also resembles my music in that it uses poetry or words for notation more than some traditional idea of choreography. Sometimes these are hard to explain for people who want to "understand" and explain things, as they are more of mental imagery to be expressed without thinking. That is why I think, that often people who understand poetry and abstractions become much better butoh dancers than those who have trained their body and flexibility. Even though it is only your body, it is not about your body, but your spirit. There is very often heard the separation or competitive attitude between contemporary dance and butoh, but the way I see it is, that in contemporary dance the body is dancing in space. In butoh, the space is pulling the body. I sometimes half-jokingly say, that the difference is contemporary dancers train their body, butoh dancers train their mind.

The purpose of the musician is to sculpt the landscape that pulls the body. Not music for dancing or performance, but a ritual of nonexistence, not-being,. If you think butoh in terms of dance, you are on the wrong path. If you think sound in terms of music, you are on the wrong path. They are neither. They can be both, as in every imaginable sound in the universe can be analyzed coincidently through terms of pitch and pulse, and every body based movement can be interpreted in terms of dance, but the reality they exist in is separate from that.

And I think this is why abstract music, or noise or industrial, whatever you want to call it, works as a fitting framework for butoh. One element that I think is important as a personal preference is low fidelity instead of high fidelity. For example also in filming a performance, but especially in terms of sound. If the aim of the atmosphere is the collapse of body, collapse of mind, identity, decay and disintegration, rusting of personality and memory, the methods used need to speak the same language as the butoh dancer. I have seem some performances where I couldn't focus on anything the dancer was doing as the sound world appeared to be from a completely separate world with everything else. Also filming the performance, in this day and age when everything is ultra HD Idontevenknowwhat"k"arethegoingoninnow, I have still not seen any recorded performance that would have overcome the power of those grainy films from the 1970's and 1980's. The reason is not that the butoh was better, I think there are amazing butoh artists right now, I think it is more about how the ideas of documentation have changed in the current era. You don't need to see all of the world all the time. Night is supposed to be dark. Leave things unclear and have the imagination fill in the gaps. In the age of ultra HD, there is no room for ghosts. That is why I consider tape also absolutely the most fitting format for my music, as it wears down with time and eventually disintegrates and disappears into a mass of.. sound. To me that is a perfect depiction of a human consciousness. It is something beyond words, that both butoh and my music reach out for.

Low fidelity and tape decay will create the fitting atmosphere for butoh, rather quickly and efficiently. Of course live instrumentation, environmental sound, acoustic instruments and especially self-built electro-acoustic instruments work too, anything a body can do works also really well. I aim to create a rhythm not for dancing, but for a body. One element is there for the heavy beating of the heart, other for breaths, some sounds for metabolism, some for blood flow, etc. I also love the strange musicality of metal, of springs and wires, plates, broken cymbals.. They are to me the very first touch I had with music, before I knew how to make any of it, as a child in the countryside, scraping the huge metal doors of barns or sides of tractor carts, concrete mills, whatever there was that could make a sound. Last year, while harvesting rice I actually realized how much the simple field works and countryside life has affected my sense of rhythm. I think in that rural sense of rhythm there is definitely something that is common to many Finnish and Japanese people who grew up like myself, probably it can be universal for certain generations, something that I think is definitely belonging to the world long gone though. And I think, in some strange way, that kind of seemingly minute thing might have also been what has made my sound fitting for butoh also. I think life is an accumulation of mistakes, coincidences and strange circumstances. Somehow I have found my home in the world of butoh, working in between the narrow marginals of the subgenres of underground culture, and it has brought me many amazing friendships, collaborations and interesting ideas and filled me with gratitude and love for what I do, to this path that I have dedicated my life to and intend to keep on doing so in the future also. I made this album to go along with the text. https://junkyardshaman.bandcamp.com/album/the-poetry-of-flesh-and-rust
